Honoring Eddy Merckx in style during
Thanks to the architects of ASO Patrick Mellett and Martin Francis, X-Treme has made inflatable tailor-made icons for the Tour de France for almost 20 years, such as the high-tech Flamme Rouge last Km arch and the Launch ramp for the time trials until 2017.
This year it is exactly 50 years ago that Eddy Merckx achieved his first tour victory. In addition, the yellow jersey (which Eddy Merckx was also allowed to wear 111 times) also exists exactly 100 years! To honour this birthday, "Le Grand Départ" of the Tour de France took place in Brussels this year!
Whoever thinks about the Tour, naturally also thinks about the promotion caravan. As the partner of Belgian cycling, Lotto could not be missed (of course, not to be confused with La Française des Jeux, another customer ;o) ). Lotto wanted to participate in the Belgian chapter of the gigantic Tour circus in an appropriate and striking way.
E-demonstations and X-Treme have been working together for many years, so it was a happy gathering when Matthias came by with a laptop full of sketches in one hand and the widely known yellow cycling cap in the other.
Lotto, a product of the Belgian National Lottery, would be part of the promotion caravan of the Tour during the stages through Belgium, and wanted to deploy 2 Mercedes X-class pick-ups that would be equipped with an Eddy cycling cap on the roof.
Developing a fairly formless cycling cap, which had to be installed on the vehicle driving at 90 km/ h in a safe way, is exactly something to challenge the team @ X-Treme.
It was decided that an inflatable cycling cap on an aluminum Front Runner roof rack could be the ideal solution: easy to inflate during caravan rides and before and after the air can easily be released, so that high speeds could easily be driven over the longer distances.
Based on the 3D Polystyrene technology, the ideal dimensions were determined and the design got its final shape. At the bottom the connection between inflatable and the roof rack was made by a heavy duty wooden plate, which resulted in a sleek and striking design!
With more than 1 million visitors for the city of Brussels alone during “Le Grand Départ”, the visual boost for market leader Lotto is once again invaluable! The Lotto pick-ups stood out in the gigantic promo caravan due to their creative look developed by E-Demonstrations, with the numerous audience of the product massively sharing photos and receiving yellow caps from the promo team!
In addition to the aesthetic, the practical is also important: Everyone knows the 3D Red Bull cans on the Mini's, but inflatables make it very easy to attach large 3D shapes to vehicles. In this case it is about easily removable caps, but of course other forms such as bottles, cans and mascots are perfectly possible.
